CRITICAL INVESTIGATION TUTORIAL

Notes & Quotes document a little over 2,000 – that meets the previous word count deadline but not the updated 4,500 requirement (due today). We need to establish a plan over the next few days to get the research word count up to where it needs to be. In terms of what you’ve got so far, good to see a variety of sources – some textual analysis, MM articles, web research etc. This will be important but I do think we should focus on academic research particularly in this tutorial.
One thing I noticed going through your blog – difficult to follow your notes and quotes. If it’s better on Word and you’re confident you can negotiate your way around then I have no concerns.
Textual Analysis – this was Task #1 and was due last week. Knowing exactly what to use for textual analysis for your text is tricky – an entire episode? A specific sequence? The best textual analysis is very detailed on just 2-3 minutes… I’d recommend still following this for MaM even though choosing the section will be difficult. Regardless, developing your textual analysis will be crucial for getting your N&Q document up to the 4,500 words. With textual analysis, don’t forget the media basics: key conventions, film language, MIGRAIN key concepts – narrative etc.
Task #2 is academic research and bibliography. Clear you’ve started academic research and great to hear you’ve started the bibliography. One request: please export your bibliography and post it to your blog next time you do this. In terms of what you should be reading – Bordwell’s Film Art is a Film Studies classic and has many references to documentary. Film Genre by Altman (all these in DF07). Cinema Studies – Key Concepts. TV Culture by Fiske.
Check Google Scholar for MaM, Netflix and (probably most successfully) TV documentary. This kind of thing might come up: http://doc.utwente.nl/99243/1/Making%20a%20Murderer%20Reveals%20the%20Blurry%20Lines%20Between%20Narrative%20and%20Fact.pdf

New task is historical text analysis – you need documentaries rather than crimes (although if you can find a documentary on a miscarriage of justice, or a trial in general, that would be great). You may want to bring in Michael Moore for your historical text analysis – he makes movies rather than TV but I think Netflix sufficiently blurs the boundaries and in the documentary genre you can’t go wrong with Michael Moore. The classic is Bowling For Columbine but he’s also done stuff on the Iraq war (Fahrenheit 9/11), US/UK health services etc.
Important secondary text: OJ Simpson Made In America.
eJump Cut is missing from your Notes and Quotes – this is a big mistake! There will be loads on your documentary so make sure you work through these: http://www.ejumpcut.org/archive/onlinessays/JC27folder/ReidmstOnDocy.html ; http://www.ejumpcut.org/archive/jc53.2011/TryonWebDoc/ ; http://www.ejumpcut.org/archive/onlinessays/JC34folder/DocyEngagemtFischel.html
Task #1&2 – make sure you develop these urgently to move the word count up to and beyond 4,500.
LR: Copy this into a new blog post called ‘Critical Investigation tutorial’ and write the next three steps in your research below my feedback.

1) FIND MORE HISTORICAL TEXTS
2) USE JUMPCUT GOOGLE SCHOLAR
3) USER RELEVANT ACADEMIC BOOKS FOR THE DOCUMENTARY GENRE
